Hello, I'm Philip La Roche and I was born in the United Kingdom 1959.
My ancestry is French dating back to Cesar La Roche (1639) who fled from France to England later in life as many French did whilst there was religious unrest. Recently I became aware that there are a few Lakota Brule families who share the same surname in South Dakota. Fascinated by this coincidence I am trying to find out if I share links with any Lakota family members who share the same surname. I have been drawn to the Sioux tribes for some time subconsciously in the work I produce and now I find out there may be a link.
I managed to to speak to another La Roche on the Brule South Dakota reservation by phone who informed me that there were many families on the reservation who share the same surname. My research to date indicates that there have been a couple of Lakota Philip La Roches who have been buried late 18th century and early 19 th century as Catholics in South Dakota. I understand many Native American men had more than one wife and that families would have many children.
Also so would the Philip La Roches who were Native American have Lakota names?
I am unsure how to progress with my search for possible links to my heritage so any help or advice would be welcomed.
Philip

aristlaroc: Welcome to our website. do you know when he fled to England(approximate year) do you know if he was the only one of his family to flee to England? did he die in England?if he died in Englansd, did he marry and have a family? Reason I ask,is maybe one or more of his children came to either Canada or the US, or came to the US via Canada.if the answer to both quetionsis no,then you can stop your search. also you should make up a chart starting with your parents and work back on it,writing vital dates for each set of parents, each set of grandparents ,etc. go back as far as you can .

Thank you Hermin for the great advice. I have asked my sister who has the family tree to give me the answers I need. I'm pretty sure that there are many La Roches who went to Canada from England who worked as trappers and fur traders. I will get back once I have the answers.

that is great. We will be here to help you as much as we can. many of the Dakota Sioux and other bands, and possibly tribes descended from French Canadians(emigres to Canada, or second generation descendents of the French).

I forgot toad that a lot of the French Canadians were once soldiers sent to Canada from France. some of them stayed in Canada and raised families.some of these then migrated to the Us, or became traders who then came to the US.

The Families at Spirit Lake Dakota Nation (Devils Lake, North Dakota) spell their name LaRock They are descendant from Augustine LaRoche who had a fur post circa 1820 on an island in the center of Devils Lake. The island, now a peninsula is the Camp Grafton National Guard training facility. Hope this helps, Louie

Thank you for this information. I have just received the English side of the family tree from my sister so I need to examine to find out who went to Canada/USA. I have found a Canadian trapper called Ben La Roche whose / friend(possibly brother - Jimmy shepherd ) was from England. Died May 1894. This is pretty exciting, once I have studied the family tree I will let you know my findings. Also in another book I have a list of LA Roches who went to Canada and USA 17th,18th and 19th century's .

Hermin: When I said Yanktons having the name LaRoche, I meant the modern day families. By contacting them they could also shed light on the family tree. Sorry for the mix up. Louie

no problem Louie. I would recommend you go to www.skipease.com and in the search engine just type in the surname you seek, select south Dakota as the state and then click on Search and see what results you get.i had done a search for one of the LaRoches a couple years ago, but he has since died.
